And you know I'm gonna write it alllllllll down!

Today was a productive day in a big blue sea of productive days. And I've really needed that.

Since this blog was originally about my vintage reselling adventures, let me say Paris on Ponce is still going well - it's paying for itself and I love the idea of what I have going there. I'm the inexpensive mid-century dealer. I believe I've carved out that niche and I want to keep doing it but it's been just-slow-enough that it hasn't required a lot of my energy for the past few months. But all that's just to say - getting back to auctions and weekend hunting excites me to no end now that spring is springing here in Atlanta.

So - what have I been doing? I've poured myself into my freelance project management work and that's proving very rewarding. When I started that I did some math. I needed to work "x" hours a week for Lea and I to be able to make ends meet. That was a pretty small figure which was a pretty cool notion.

Accordingly, I spent so much valuable time with Alice in 2012 that I wouldn't change it - at all. These days I'm working twice my original weekly requirement and I'm still enjoying my life, daughter, wife, family and friends. I feel lucky and at least for now, I'm in a great groove! A grateful groove.

Alice started school two weeks ago. First time ever. She's a freaking rock star. She loves it. Loves her teachers and likes most of the kids. Except the boys (for now) - Zeke excluded. He's a doll.

That brings me to the motivation for this blog-post. Chit-chat on the playground! I've met a MOM - and I like her!

Ahhh - mommies on the playground!

Who knew I wouldn't detest causal fodder about other people's' kids and lives.

No - instead I quite enjoy it. Not surprisingly, I over-shared about my life which left me rather tickled at myself.

It's clear to me that I want the playground parents to know who we are as a family.

I'm anxious to get it all out there - how we manage co-parenting, plans for our future, et al.

New and unconnected acceptance. I found it refreshing.

Ayana is Zeke's mom and she and I might be in a similar place energetically. I read a blog she wrote today called "I will be successful...at something...maybe..." and it got me thinking...

Yea...I sure did grow up thinking I'd have lots of money and be super successful. I think about that a lot actually. A lot of us must! No one wants to be mediocre. Today, on this February day in 2013 - it's not that I don't still wonder what I'll be when I grow up - because I do - because I'm not there yet - but I also know money and success are relative. Right now I'm in family mode.

Be family, love family, grow family.

Besides - my "problems" - they're #firstworldproblems - so trivial that they require a gratuitous hashtag.

Here's what I know tonight:

I'm happily married.

I LOVE my wife - like really. Not just publicly - we're REALLY in love.

We have an AMAZING daughter.

Plus - everything I'm doing in life is first - enjoyable - really! A LOT of the time! And secondly - it's all relatively positive, energetically.

I'm proud of April Maglothin tonight.

I'm proud of TIM MAGLOTHIN tonight.

I miss hosting the How Stuff Works Podcast - which feels good to realize.

We bought a LOT of vegetables this week and I actually believe we'll eat them all.

I don't want to clean up the kitchen - but I will with the help of my lovely wife.

I love our dogs - a LOT.

Tomorrow will be a hectic day.

I have a new project in the works involving me and two other super strong women and I hope that becomes something real.

I support Lea in her quest for us to have an at-home garden. Looking forward to celebrating her imminent success at it!

I'll miss Alice terribly until she comes home from Daddy's house on Saturday.

My #1to100 quest is proving daunting but you can watch me try on Instagram: "sarahelizabethprice"

The best thing I did this week was get in the bathtub with Alice with all my clothes on. She didn't think I would - and neither did I and then I just did. It was randomly rad.

I'm wicked creative. (I can say wicked in conversation now because I'm married to a Mainer.)

I may not exercise my creative abilities as often as I could - but I'm feeling a general openness to my artistic side.

The new residence is settled enough that my biggest house-hold concern is how to organize my crafts and that feels GOOD.

I want to be doing more creatively but I've been saying that for decades. Holy shit - DECADES!

To that last point - here's what I vow to do about that (this time.) Ayana and I are going to be creative-accountables to one another for as long as it's fun. We'll challenge each other to do something creative, weekly. A task that might be terribly specific or wide, wide open. And if we hate doing it - fine, I'll search for another source of accountability but for tonight, it's nice to have a person.

So here's your first creative challenge, Ayana: Create a collage of you and your husband. Any media. Any size. Only you and him. You have a week. Will you accept this challenge?!

Here's something else I know: I wrote a FREAKING BLOG POST! The first in nine months for NO GOOD REASON.

I'm shaking my head at myself on the inside. I can't do it on the outside because Lea will make fun of me for interacting with my own thoughts...

Can't post without a couple of photos:
Enjoy...

Well - okay. It has been an entire summer since I've posted anything here. I'm not really sure why. Part of it is that I've been busy with all things S.A.L.vage and all things not-S.A.L.vage.

We haven't traveled much this summer but we did get away for nearly two weeks to Lea's home in Maine - that was amazing. And we have just been super busy getting into what has become our new-norm.

I definitely work for myself both with the re-selling at Paris on Ponce AND as a project manager for local interactive web groups - that's what I have always done professionally and it's nice to be able to do it from home now for smart clients that share similar life/work balance sentiment.

I think I have become a better wife this summer, really attacking the home duties better than ever and we're on a crazy (not really - actually pretty biologically normal) diet - so I'm cooking nearly every night. All that feels good - just keeps me busy.

The shop has been slow this month but overall it's been a great summer in that regard. We put ourselves on a financial freeze trying to get rid of some inventory we had stored at home.

I'm really trying to just purchase and / or acquire pieces that I have room for at the shop - AT THAT MOMENT. In other words, no more using our home as a storage unit! It makes us all crazy.

We finally got our wood rings up on the partition wall and it looks great. Currently there is a great selection of mid-cen tables, a vintage, wooden school desk, an orange vinyl therapy couch acquired from a local elementary school - oh the stories!...and a lot of other cool stuff. All priced to sell! So...hopefully it'll all sell!

At home, I finally got Alice's room in better order. We purchased a vintage mini-piano (not so mini weighing in at like 800 pounds) for her room at auction late last spring and we JUST got it set up. Isn't it adorable?!

The hand-drawn "Famous Women in History" Alphabet Deck is strung up and displayed in a frame I bought from Paris on Ponce before I had a shop there.

*UPDATE - this is so out-of-date. We've MOVED since!

Michelle Obama was great at the DNC 2012. We watched it all. Well, lots of it. Watched the RNC too. Ugh.

I loved everything that came out of her mouth and I'm inspired by our first family more than ever.

I've been sewing a lot for my friend and tattoo artist, Danielle's little girl. I mean really - this upcycled denim blouse with vintage buttons is almost too much. I love it so.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04211019104965346850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-723138420934906295.post-6628776609476974942012-05-21T16:56:00.001-07:002013-02-27T21:04:33.065-08:00Breaking Even on this Manic Monday

Once upon a time my wife Lea and I had insurance claims filed on each of our vehicles at the same time due to events / damages that occurred...wait for it...when we weren't even in our cars!

1) My car = wrecked by a valet driver
2) Lea's car 'hit and run' while parked on our street

Dag! Right?!

So we've been a one car family for a couple of weeks while one and then the other car has been repaired.

But the show must go on!

That's right. I'm still managing to fluff the booth at Paris on Ponce and the whole shop looks beautiful. It's super great to be a part of such a spectacular vintage family. It feels good when I walk in the doors, there's a vibrant and inspiring buzz in the air there and cool things are happening!

THE LEAST OF WHICH ISN'T FREE MIMOSAS ON THE WEEKENDS!

Oh and a BLOWOUT SALE!

Yes - there were mimosas at the shop all weekend and our mascot Baudelaire was holding down the bar - er fort!

The weekend was lovely. In addition to vintage loveliness, there was live music - at least twice and festivals and Streets Alive and...and...and...fun was had. To be sure! See:

...and we finally get my car back tomorrow and all will be right with the world.

Stay tuned for more new items all the time. Right now the list is long and my space is full of ridiculous deals.
S.A.L.vage

Comprised of Sarah, Alice and Lea (in no particular order except that it spells S.A.L. in that order) but we are actually a family of 5!

Isabel has been in my life longer than anyone - crazy! We've "been together" for almost ten years. We made it past the two year itch and it's been a match made in heaven ever since! This is Isabel (aka "The Rabbit) asleep on the sofa. Passed out with Lea - some night - before 10 - I'm sure...

So the fifth family member is NEW! He's also four-legged and he's a big, mushy, love-face!
What's May Day?

I'm in Nashville, TN today for a very special occasion. My best friend is having her baby today and I am at Baptist Hospital with her family in the waiting room.

So THIS May Day is very special! Hopefully it will also prove to be little miss baby's birthday!

I suppose there's a chance she could be born tomorrow - but we're crossing our fingers for mom and dad that they have less than 10 hours left before they get to meet her! And of course before I get to hold her!

Lea and Alice are back in Atlanta and I'm missing my girls big time but it's for great reason and the people I'm with are truly like family. <3

Re: S.A.L.vage, I got the shop in great shape before I left town. There are some new pieces, big and small.

Among the large pieces, there's now a 1950s wardrobe / dresser with two sliding doors hiding these small and very cool, roll-out drawers. They are cork lined! Below that, there are three big drawers for folded clothes. Very neat!

I also took a small, baby blue, vintage shopping cart. That's actually a piece I used for years in my home. I put linens, throw pillows, stuffed animals, etc. in it and that is really adorable too.

The month of April was a calm month at the shop overall - although I did well enough myself. Either way, in efforts to really move things, I've got everything priced to sell! A couple of pieces were reduced a bit and I'm ready to sell the big stuff and get some new energy in there!

If you still haven't been to Paris on Ponce, go! It's really a fun and inspiring place!

I'm attaching 1) "Impatient Face" and 2) 1950s wardrobe photos.

...May 1st, 2012. Let that be her birthday, please!

I wish I'd brought a book...
The delay is silly but I have been busy!

The Grand Reopening at POP was lovely - I'd guess these were 300+ people there and that's what I call a success!

Sales are good. I'm contemplating taking some lingering larger pieces out for a while to rotate in new items. Still deciding about that.

I've been picking up some new smalls and got them all priced today to take to the shop tomorrow. Among them: vases, figurines, serving dishes, glass pipettes - *talk nerdy to me* - bookends, dishes and more. Here are a couple of cuties - one being that of a white Czechoslovakian horse in a Lego barn...thanks to the the others members of Team S.A.L. for that gem!

Go buy something!
Really. I am kind of obsessed with the textile spools. This you will notice is the second post dedicated to them.solely.

I just wanted to post a quick 'before and after' image of the clean up that happened today.

Also - have to nod at the sheer joy of being able to spend my days doing things like this. Seriously. So exactly how I imagined this could work.

The chore of it:
Hardly. The sky was blue, temp near 80 (spring in Atlanta is by the way, my FAVORITE) and I was in spaghetti straps on the porch. Perfection. I was a hahahappy lady!

The beauty of it:
If I loved them before - I am beyond smitten now. The colors are even more beautiful. And where the repetition of shape attracted me to them in the first place, now that repetition is compounded (in a good way) in beautiful layers and layers and layers of paint that can now be appreciated. See the pink one below - after the clean up. Bottom center - it's like rings on a tree - so great! Big love. Obviously.

I 'shopped two quick before & afters to show the difference - just two I grabbed. Anyone love them as much as me?

Bueller...? Bueller...?

First batch is headed to POP tomorrow in time for the weekend. Go get 'em!
Because They're AWESOME!This weekend lent itself to scrappy, get-dirty-or-go-home picking and I had a B-L-A-S-T!

Favorite find: Industrial textile spools. Why? Because they're AWESOME!

This is where my intuition takes over and I see possibility in the unexpected. I am also incredibly attracted to repetition and when I saw a number of these beauties piled up I knew I had to make them mine...so they could be [yours].

I was with Lea, Alice and our great buddy Blair. I got facial question marks but insisted they were worth it. We crunched some numbers, I practiced my best bargaining and set out to make a deal.

I bought as many as I could afford and they're coming soon to the booth at Paris on Ponce. A little clean up + some creative and suggestive displaying will suit them well.

Yet another find that I'll have a hard time letting go...

Yummy, yummy gnarly repetition:

The shoe? That's for perspective: ~9 inches tall

Repetition = happiness.

So how were they used originally?

Well they are large spools for thread used on industrial sewing machines. They're still made today. These are at least well-used if not actually vintage. And...*ahem*...I like to think the people who have touched them were paid well and treated fairly. But get hung up on that and we'd have nothing in our homes...so there's that buzz-kill.

So how are people up-cycling these beauties?

Think: hat / wine / pot racks...book ends + I want to hang scarves, pearls, dog leashes and / or robes on them. And last but not least - ART! Had I a brick wall in my home, I'd cover it with these. The possibilities are so so fun. Can't wait to sell them one precious spool at a time...or if you'd like to purchase 6 dozen at a time, that'd be just fine too.

Well - I had a successful day but I just spent the last hour losing ebay auctions!

'Here's what' about me...If I'm sending a text / email / FB message, etc. and an error occurs, I usually stop and rethink whether or not I should really send said text / email / FB message, etc. I think of it as a second chance to make 100% sure I want to pull the trigger. Now - I don't send a a lot of dramatic emails or anything - so there's often no reason NOT to go ahead and "send it"...I'm just saying, that's how my brain works.

So - the same rule applies to losing...and losing...and losing on eBay. I'm usually very savvy and swift on eBay and I win most things I bid on - but like I said, I just lost...checking quantity...FIIIIIIVE auctions.

You win and lose - that's the way it goes but these repeat losses just killed my spirit and I'm throwing in the towel tonight. Not even bidding on the final items I'm watching. There must be some *reason* I'm not supposed to. ;)

Gotta listen to the universe, right?

Oh but the fun stuff from the successful part of my day! I stopped in a couple favorite spots in the city today and scored a couple of gems:

First off - here's my favorite lil thing I saw today - just a photo of a cute lil ass!
That means, I'm only expected to make enough dough to cover the cost of the booth in the beginning.

Well - I'm happy to report I have already 'made rent' this month. In fact, I'd made rent by this past Saturday. SO - now on to bigger and better things...like 'making our home rent' and 'paying our bills'...
What sold? The aahmazing KLH stereo system. I knew it'd be one of the first things to sell but I'm a little sad it's gone. I had a hard time pricing it partially because Lea and I loved it so - but I also knew people would pay a good bit for it.

How to strike a good balance that gets it sold but doesn't make us feel like we "let it slip away"?

Well - we went with what "felt right" and I'm not sure I struck that balance 100% / exactly right - BUT - I did learn a little more about that pricing struggle, the importance of writing "firm" on the pieces I am (too) emotionally attached to (like this one) and so forth and so on...and I'm *sure* the education is priceless.

I'm happy to begin looking for a stunner to fill its place.

Bye bye KLH...you've got a good home now but I miss you already!
P.S. - Thanks for paying the rent.

Brand new booth space going into the weekend!

I am so pleased to announce the booth at Paris on Ponce is open! I spent the majority of yesterday moving in my big stuff and organizing things in the space.

Today was for moving in my smalls (of which I need a lot more) and pricing. I was a little torn about whether I had too many large pieces crammed in - but for now I'm leaving it all. The major goal was to get things to a good place for the weekend because we are driving to Nashville to visit my best friend and her husband this weekend.

I feel pretty good about the state of things - and I feel REAL good about being able to start fresh on Monday and tweak things. Vintage ashtrays are displayed on the second wall. I have another 15 or so to hang early next week. And I guess the wood slices are happening soon. But not right away. I'm exhausted. So happy it's over because that means it has begun!
It's so super sexy and in what I call VERY GOOD conditon and it sounds GREAT!
I secretly want Lea to keep it because she loves it a LOT! So...somebody better buy it before her birthday.
I teared up. I bet she'd call that a "mission accomplished".

Love my sweet Lea!
Oh and by the by...I sold two pieces first thing today. Woot! Bring on the weekend!

I'm sew sawry y'all!

The main reason for the delay is that I'm on hold regarding my booth move in. That's disappointing but understandable. The folks at Paris on Ponce are changing a LOT of things right now - I'm but a fraction of the change coming that way - so they're busy and still working on finalizing the new spaces. All that said - it's making me feel like I'm doing nothing...

But I am keeping busy. Maybe you have interest in what my life is like beyond the vintage...so here goes...

All in order, all in a day's uh - to-do list + thoughts and observations + useless fodder:

I Woke Up!

Crewcut Catalog

Thought on Procrastination

Lea's Divine Dinner

Blogging Counts!

Elaboration + Details = Elaboratails:

I Woke Up! This isn't just the first thing I did today, this is good news! I had a TURRIBLE 'stomach something' all day yesterday and I spent the whole night writhing in pain and breaking fever. I woke up three or four times sweating my ass off but I guess it was a step in the right direction because 8 hours earlier I thought I was dying. This is sicky morning face:

Crewcut Catalog - that's the name of the JCrew Kid's catalog and man-oh-man it's so cute this season! In my humble opinion, little girl's clothes are often much more fun that the boy's options but this catalog has done a rather good job of flipping the script. In other words, their boy's clothes are killin' it right now. I wish I had a dapper lil' man in need of legit layers, suitable suits & keen kicks! Look at a couple of the cutest kids ever and their swank-y-ness:

Thought on Procrastination - I'm sure I have more than one but I'll get to those later...Is it really procrastination if you KNOW you can accomplish your task in a much shorter amount of time?

Bedding Blunder...We purchased all of our bedding from wedding money a few months ago and I can honestly say it warms my heart and makes me think of our sweet time in Vermont every time I see them. We have 10 pillows (two for sleeping, two shams, and six accent pillows) that make up our ensamble and most of the time 8 of them live on our "pillow shelf" (pictured below as: 'empty') because I really and truly prefer a comfortable rumpled boudoir over a must-be-made-up-every-day bed. Anyway, once I was moving today I put away some laundry and decided to make the bed. So the blunder is re: the pillows. From day one I have had a hard time making them look "right". Today they are "wrong" - rul rul wrong. Relative, 'in my head' thought earlier: Damn, I wish I could remember how that house keeper arranged our pillows because they looked SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS (that one time we paid someone to clean our house):

Baah Humbug! Alice has a stuffed animal named "Baah" - he's a sheep. Baah suffered a mild attack last night from one of my mom's four legged children so I had to perform surgery on him today. There were approximately 3,421 tiny plastic beads buried in Alice's fluffy shag rug and I had a thought. This is something I wish for often - one of those guaranteed, never to be granted wishes: I wish I could somehow know the answer to an impossible question. In this case, I wish I knew how many plastic beads remained in the carpet after twenty minutes of digging. It would give me something to work towards - a goal. Instead I ran my fingers through it and found what I could. All is well. Alice will never notice her pal's new patch.

Camis for my Cub - this one is quick and simple. I love nice basics in my wardrobe and I love them for Alice too. I don't buy clothes that have logos or words, marketing, slogans, etc. on them. Today I was putting away Alice's clothes after I fixed her Baah and I celebrated again a simple good thing that I found a couple of days ago - Toddler Camis from Hanes. Thank you Hanes! Spring layering just got that much easier! Seriously - if you've ever tried to find tank tops or spaghetti straps for a little one you know what I'm talking about! Rhinestones, ruffles and ridiculousness often abound!

Quiltorial - I've decided I'm making a quilt. Accordingly, I spent about two hours picking out my fabrics online and teaching myself via youtube and other online tutorials how I will accomplish this new goal. This will be my first. The inspiration and tutorials all got posted on my new Pinterest Board: Quiltorial.

Succulent Propagation - I need to birth me some succulents! A lot of them actually for something I'm working on so I purchased a couple of lovely and leggy, indoor, hanging plants. One is an Portulacaria afra or "Elephant Bush" and the other is a Senecio or "Fish Hook". Since I have never done it before - I can't be sure this is all correct but I have snipped each of about 60 clippings at a joint since I understand most succulents can root from any joint. They are now callusing - as in forming calluses on all the fresh cuts - on a tray for three days before I can root them in soil. Meh - I really hope this works.

Lea's Divine Dinner - HOLY PALEO CRABCAKE! We're eating a Paleo diet and when we get creative, amazing things happen. Lea was in the mood for crabcakes and she hit a home run with this dinner. This works for any low carb or gluten free diet and you'd never know there was a single carb missing! Check out Everyday Paleo's recipe here. She didn't follow their instructions completely because we had more crab than they called for and other minor adjustments were made in the interest of spontaneity - but our dinner was delicious and *clean. I by the way had nothing to do with this meal. Thank you for the deliciousness BABE!

*Clean = A paleo diet:

Wow, Steven Tyler Went There - We watch American Idol. Mhmm. The most remarkable thing I saw tonight had nothing to do with singing - and that says more about the singing that this not so remarkable note: I was sad for Jennifer Lopez when Steven called her out tonight on the live show about her nip slip at the Oscars! I mean - I wouldn't even say I really saw anything "off" with regard to her coverage except that E! showed a not-originally-aired clip of her and Diaz turned around, backs to the camera adjusting "something" last night. And then there's this: who cares anyway?!!! They both looked great!

Blogging Counts! Writing this blog consumed a good part of my evening...especially when blogspot makes properly positioning the photos practically imPossible! You put your cursor in a spot and hit the "add photo" button and it lands somewhere else entirely. Irritating! #endrant
Also, alliteration! I nerded out here with regard to alliteration in efforts to emphasize and aid in memory retention. Dang, I really wish there was an "M" word synonymous with retention. Oh well.

Alright. For me, this helps bridge the gap between last week's progress and what's happening now even though - with regard to my vintage voyage (hehe) I feel like I'm standing still.

Good night now.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04211019104965346850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-723138420934906295.post-43940880557605336972012-02-20T21:17:00.000-08:002012-02-20T21:20:11.774-08:00I am My AudienceI keep saying 'I am my audience'. Jury is still out as to whether or not that's a viable business strategy - but it's what I know and it's what feels right - so it's what I'm doing.

I'm shopping for and selling to people that like what I like, people that are drawn to the same lines, colors, and textures as I am. Also - people who are searching for a vision that they can't come to on their own. To that point, I care a lot about how I'm marketing this venture - the pieces I'm choosing to sell, my signage and booth decor, the way I talk about what I'm doing (here, on Pinterest and on FB)...even my price tags are a detail I'm super nerdy about.

I've designed a tag that I'd be drawn to...and I hope it serves my audience well. I want to scream the prices because - let's face it - that's the bottom line. I also want to provide details about the pieces - certainly if there's a known maker or designer - I want to educate my shoppers about that. I am conjuring up descriptions that are informative and fun. Such as - "Super collectible but more importantly - SEXY!"

As with everything I write - the descriptions are conversational - and hopefully not obnoxious. I chose to write them on my typewriter because 1) I never love my handwriting and 2) it's so charming and vintage all by itself.

Here's a peek. Enjoy!

Alright - so today is yesterday's tomorrow - and the day I said I'd attempt the log slicing again. It happened!

Lea and I worked on our front porch with the mitre saw for about four hours. The sad news is we still don't have enough effing slices!!! Grr.

We've decided we'll hang a large print on the wall directly so that we don't have to cover that area with rounds. Seems a little like a hasty short cut but I'm really not sure we have enough wood otherwise.

Today I cut around 300 slices and I have a plan to get the rest cut in the morning before Lea, my mom and I move all of my merchandise into the booth tomorrow.

*sigh* All that is real overwhelming and probably means I should go to bed...rhut now.

Real quick - here are some photos from our day:
I love the way Skip (an owner) at Paris on Ponce has decided to delineate the vendor spaces in the area where I'll be. It's open and I think it will feel fluid for shoppers.

So - spaces are marked off by these great partition walls that they built. As a vendor, it's my job to decorate them - to give them personality - to set MYSELF and MY BOOTH apart.

I had a hundred ideas of what I might do from fiber art (i.e. - a friend suggested finger knitting a dozen + skeins of yarn to cover the whole wall) to a hand painted mural to to to...the list went on and I was having a hard time editing myself.

One night Lea and I were talking about a couple of her large framed prints (photography) that I'm planning on selling in the booth and she said something about one of them having been printed for a large(er still) wheat-pasting-(illegal)-project she always wanted to do. She printed it a long time ago but I'm pretty sure I was too nervous about the legality (lack thereof) of what she wanted to do and I put the kibosh on that dream...

If you're confused, see: Wiki on Wheatpasting.

Anyway, WE REALIZED we had a great solution therein for one of my two walls at the shop! Yes so the larger of the two walls is now covered in one of my wife's great photographs and that just warms my heart to no end.

Lea's photograph is a little difficult to make out in these images. You can view it here.

The other wall is still not 100% worked out in my head. Well, I know what I want to do but I had a slight...er, minor - super insignificant...really not even worth mentioning...wee safety concern...while lopping the lumber for that project. *ahem*

Jury is still out but I plan on tackling that project again tomorrow...if Lea will let me. I'm slicing some large poplar limbs into 1/4 inch slices and covering the wall with them. There's an image of the solution below. Those people probably have a table saw...I'm using my less-than-ideal chop saw. Meh.

SO - back to yesterday! The space was built out and super clean when we arrived. We began by painting a coat of grey paint on the smaller (right) wall. This will be the backdrop for the wood slices...

Simple grey backdrop on the right wall

I said it was simple...for now...

Then I began rolling the larger (left) wall with the paste we brought. Now - I hate to say that I was afraid to use "real" homemade wheatpaste - but that is a true statement. I was scared of the usual flour, water, corn starch / sugar recipe because it's inside...and it's not even MY inside. What if there were ants??? I would feel awful if that happened and plus the furniture and wares that will be between these two walls are all FOR SALE so if there were bugs...well, you know. Not ideal. That said, we did in fact buy a clear wallpaper paste and thin it a bit to hang the piece. We rolled and hung a section at a time and hung the image in three panels. We had to measure and trim the image prior to hanging it. As a side note, the team work required to successfully tackle a project like this is nothing short of amazing. Lea and I are a good team when it comes to DIY stuff but we both have to check ourselves the whole time. I'm bossy - and <strike>I think</strike> my way is always the best way. Lea is a HUGE worrier! Like 'the sky is falling' kind of reaction to things - especially things that make her nervous like installing an 8 foot photograph that she takes lots of pride in. She also secretly prefers that I do the dirty work. So our team work sounded something like: "Hold this like this. No not like that - are you...can you just - look, like THIS."I am""No - ugh...not like that...okay - yeah, that's fine""OMG Sarah you're going to tear it. SLOW DOWN - omg babe...OMG BABE. You're making me so nervous!""Do you want to take over?""No""K - then hold this like this"...you get the idea. Insert an absorbent amount of (unspoken) love in those words - and that's how we got the job done. And we left hand-in-hand + smiling - so that's good.

I found this chair - er - partial chair a while back and wanted to save it (her)...to give her new life.

This was one that Lea shook her head at originally - i.e. "honey it only has two legs and no seat."

It was in someone's garbage but it had perfectly in-tact double caning around the sides and back...I just had to save it!

So I began the surgery today and I'm proud to say she now has four legs again! There's a lot more to do but what a great start!

I'll post more pictures as the second...third...(likey) fourth surgeries are tackled. Stay tuned!

I'm not 100% decided but I think she'll end up painted. Maybe glossy white with a fun seat? I'd be open to your suggestions...
Here's a little peek at some of the goodies I am bringing to Paris on Ponce next week.

Mid Century coffee table - beautiful lines

Four Mid Century Teak Chairs (peeking out on the left) black vinyl seats.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04211019104965346850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-723138420934906295.post-50198964936788304372012-02-10T20:29:00.000-08:002012-02-18T22:03:51.634-08:00Reindeer Cookie Jar(?)Today Alice and I woke up and went to an estate sale in a nearby neighborhood. Most of the furniture was a bit traditional for my taste - about 30 years too old for my liking. Ha.

I did find one thing I had to have...

Eeeeeee! I can hardly stand it - he's so cute!

Vintage + Italian china + reindeer + cookie jar(?) - "A Mottahedeh design". Mottahedeh china has been around for decades and hold licenses to make reproductions and adaptations from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Colonial Williamsburg, Winterthur, Monticello, Historic Charleston, Historic Natchez, and the National Trust. Mottahedeh china has been made for the President, the State Department and for the Diplomatic Corps.

Somehow it seems appropriate that I scored him at the same sale where I took home most of Elton John's vinyl catalog and I believe all of Linda Ronstadt's. Not sure yet what one [cookie jar] has to do with the other [vinyl] - it just feeeeeeels right.

I'll tell you another thing about feeeeeeelings at estate sales. I find that the energy (literally how the air feels when you walk in the door) is usually palpable and specific. Something about the house we were in today was very sad. Alice and I were exploring and I felt a change in the air and I said "Hey Alice, it's sad in here isn't it?" and she said "Yes Mommy, it is sad in here." At one point I felt like I could cry. Some other people heard me say that to my toddler and probably thought I was a nut case - but it was true - plain and simple.

You really never know - hell, they could have won the lottery and decided to get rid of everything else but that's not the sense I got today. I always try to be extra respectful and sensitive when I'm shopping a true estate sale. The family is usually not present - they've given some company permission to sell off everything with no financial expectation - 'just send me what you make, minus your (hefty) fee.' I often wonder if they get half the money they should have. BUT - that's kind of a downer now isn't it?

To end on a happy note, here is some super fun vinyl art from today's bounty. Oh Elton, how we love thee...

Really - Lea and I both make things. It's a family affair, y'all!

In the past week we've worked on a couple of things worth sharing.

We're making bud vases out of some fallen Poplar near our home. Lea perfected this product when she made them as wedding favors for our nuptials last summer. Hang them on the wall or group on a table. Inside is a small bud vase - they're adorable. Simple and sweet. I'll post another picture when I get them hung at Paris on Ponce.

*Disclaimer, we do not endorse the use of power tools while wearing slippers. Also, a Christmas tree stand is not really a safe jig.

We also sell these at Adaptation Floral Design. 100% unsolicited Atlanta endorsement = in my informed opinion, Liz at Adaptation has created THE perfect flower shop in our fair city. Adaptation is a must if you need flowers for any occasion. She's a flower magician. She did our wedding flowers. And they were perfection.
Next, we're making glassware by upcycling bottles. We came into several cases of Pellegrino bottles and need to do something with them. I've started making little rocks glasses. Here's how they're coming along so far...

They open early and stay late on the first Saturday of every month with a boat-load of new stuff each time. I was a guest-vendor of sorts since I don't have a booth with them. It was a learning experience. I hung out all day and didn't sell anything big.

To clarify - I sold *one* item. A $7.00 ceramic planter. On the up side, that's a dish Lea and I found on the side of the road in someone's trash...so that's free money...but it hardly felt free after hauling furniture to and from the shop in a few short days.

BUT THAT'S OKAY!

I left a couple of chairs there on consignment and the white child's armoire that I pictured in my previous post. If either of these items interest you - stop by Highland Row in the next couple of weeks and take them home!

Better luck next time - eh?

It felt like a secret society but I knew this was what I wanted to do with myself so I created a "booth" in my home and took some pictures with Lea. Lea is a photographer...and that doesn't hurt. Ever.

I know this business of "vintage" well as a consumer but when I began talking to people I realized I would have to sell someone on what my aesthetic would be as a vendor - hence the at-home booth, the photos and the subsequent PDF I toted around town on the iPad.

Paris on Ponce liked it, we talked about the vision of their business and how I could fit into it - and *poof* - I signed a renter's agreement and now I'm on the brink of this new adventure!

I am also confident there was a lot of "at the right place at the right time" - stars-sort-of-aligning energy hovering about the sky above my head as I began down this path.

These pictures are a little peek of what the Paris on Ponce family agreed to welcome into their walls.

I've never been behind the wheel of a blog devoted solely to whatever it is I want to share...so I'm as much welcoming myself as I am my (one day) audience.

I'm a vintage reseller and artist in Atlanta, GA and I need a way to share both my "inventory" and my craft. So I'm using this platform to share goodies of all kinds.

Things you should know:

I have a beautiful, doting wife and the cutest little girl there ever was!

We call ourselves "Team S.A.L." - Sarah, Alice and Lea. Lea is my wife and Alice is the two and a half year old. If you were hoping to copyright that name - don't bother. It's engraved on the back of our iPad. I'm just kidding (no that's true about the iPad). I don't know anything about copyrighting. Should I copyright the name? Anyway...

"S.A.L.vage Atlanta" is my business. I find things. I buy things. I make things. I sell things. In the next few weeks I have a booth opening at Paris on Ponce in midtown Atlanta. Paris on Ponce has been an Atlanta institution - a must-see for antique seekers since the late nineties. In the past year they have been moving to a vendor-driven business model and it's an exciting thing to be a part of. You can visit their full blog here and make sure you step through the doors soon. It's fast becoming one of those one-stop, if-you-don't-see-it-you-don't-need-it markets - err, rather - Marche! It is after all - Parisian!

S.A.L.vage Atlanta is opening it's booth doors(?) at Paris on Ponce on February 20th. I hope you'll visit the booth and I hope you'll visit the blog. This one - where you are right now. Come back. See what I have found or otherwise acquired and enjoy the adventure. I'm gonna share details about finding and making stuff here and I'm gonna sell all the goodies there. So in short, visiting both the blog and the booth are key here.

The next few posts and pictures are the fruit of my January adventures and they're just the beginning. Making money doing this is the goal - but changing course in my professional path and pursuing this new opportunity is already proving to be totally rewarding. For the first time in a long time, I'm doing something I love and well - loving it. Does that inspire you? It inspires the heck out of me!

Here we go!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04211019104965346850noreply@blogger.com0
